FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ZigBee Products to Emerge in 2005
SAN DIEGO, Calif.,
April 21, 2005/PR Newswire/ -- ZigBee-certified products will be shipping
in several high volume markets by year end, according to recent research
by ON World.
“OEMs and
end-users are demanding interoperable low data rate wireless standards
and ZigBee is their choice,” says ON World’s senior analyst
Dr. Charlie Chi. “While the ZigBee Alliance is completing Version
1.0, the hardware dependent ZigBee specification has presented an opportunity
for proprietary wireless sensor network solutions,” he says
Standards versus
Proprietary
According to Chi, “The lack of standards is not inhibiting initial
customer adoption in the industrial sector.” ON World found that
there is high demand for wireless sensor networking in several large
industrial markets. Several innovative startups such as Crossbow Technology,
Dust Networks, Millennial Net and Sensicast are providing wireless sensor
network solutions that meet customers’ needs today. While not
interoperable with other vendors' products, these proprietary solutions
give customers a variety of RF transceiver options and they can be deployed
today.
ZigBee ramping up
For OEMs that demand standards, there are now four ZigBee-compliant
platforms available from Chipcon, Freescale, CompXs and Ember Corp.
ON World predicts that the first ZigBee products will appear in home
monitoring, control and automation; building monitoring and automation
and automated meter reading.
Regardless of standards
preference, ON World’s latest survey results with end-users found
that complex installation and lack of seamless integration were the
top two limitations inhibiting widespread adoption of wireless sensing
solutions.
