500 Million Smart Home WSN Chipset Shipments in 2020

ON World’s recently completed survey with 1,000 U.S. consumers found that 1 in 3 are likely to use a smart home sensing system within the next three years.  Of those interested in smart home products, the majority would like to integrate two or more smart home applications.

San Diego, CA August 27, 2015— Rapidly growing demand for smart home products and services has created a challenging environment for wireless sensor network (WSN) developers to keep pace, according to global technology research firm ON World.

“The smart home is now the focal point for wireless sensing IoT technologies,” said Mareca Hatler ON World’s research director.  “Plummeting component costs, cloud service platforms and standards based low power sensing technologies are providing a fertile smart home ecosystem.”

ON World’s recently completed survey with 1,000 U.S. online adults found that about 1 in 3 are likely to use a smart home sensing system within the next three years.  Of those interested in smart home products, the majority would like to integrate two or more smart home applications.

To support a new generation of software IoT applications, IP addressability has become a key focus for smart home WSN technologies.  Examples include the IP-based open source AllJoyn software framework, Bluetooth 4.2 that will support IPv6 and the wireless mesh IP-based Thread specification.  Although WiFi is used for popular smart home products including WeMo switches and sensors, LIFX smart LED light bulbs and Rachio smart sprinklers, mesh networking is increasingly viewed as essential for whole home coverage.  This gives the advantage to ZigBee, Thread, Z-Wave and now Bluetooth with a Smart Mesh specification planned to be completed next year.

Despite intensifying competition among smart home wireless sensing technologies, cross-technology collaborations are underway.   Qualcomm— creator of the initial AllJoyn software and founding member of the AllSeen Alliance— recently joined the Thread Group as a board member.   Also, an executive with CSR/Qualcomm has discussed the possibility of using Thread over Bluetooth radios.

By 2020, global annual smart home wireless sensor network chipset shipments will reach 500 million up from 50 million in 2014.

Based on input from 2,500 individuals, ON World’s report, “Wireless Sensor Network Markets,” analyzes the market forces and competitive landscape for 50 unique markets and provides extensive 5-year forecasts (devices, services and chipsets) for each market segment by application, geographical region and technology.  A few of the WSN technologies covered in the report include 802.15.4, ZigBee, 6LoWPAN/Thread, WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, EnOcean, ANT, LoRaWAN and others.
