18 Million Health WSN Systems Will Ship in 2017

ON World’s latest research analyzes how cloud connected wireless sensor networks are expanding opportunities for health and wellness.

San Diego, CA, March 26, 2013-- Smart mobile devices connected to wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have created new market opportunities for health and wellness, according to global technology research firm ON World.

In 2017, there will be 18.2 million health and wellness WSN systems shipped worldwide representing 60 million annual WSN chipsets at this time. Mobile WSNs-- including wireless wearable/implantable sensors and other cloud connected body area networks-- will increase by a 75% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years.

“With half a billion dollars in venture funding, a new generation of wireless health solutions is emerging, says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s director of research. “Mobile wireless sensing solutions are transforming health and wellness from chronic disease management to self-managed health and prevention.”

A few examples of mobile WSNs include cellular enabled health systems from Cellnovo, Sanofi and Telcare; AliveCor’s wireless ECG heart monitor; Sotera’s wrist-worn vital sign monitor and growing number of Bluetooth devices.
Currently used in 9% of health WSN products, Bluetooth Smart is the fastest growing technology for health and wellness.

Consumer health products such as blood pressure monitors, ECGs and body weight scales will experience the largest growth in WSN health related markets.  Wireless sensing solutions for general wellness will increase by 1600% over the next five years when these will make up 41% of the device shipments.

ON World’s survey with 530 early technology adopters found high demand for cloud connected health solutions.  Thirty-three (33%) are “Likely” or “Most likely” to use a Web connected weight scale and 25% are likely/most likely to use a Web sleep monitoring service.

Based on input from over 750 individuals, “Health & Wellness Wireless Sensor Networks” covers the global market for wireless sensor network systems used for health and wellness. This includes an in-depth analysis of 16 unique applications for hospitals/clinics, chronic disease management, assisted care and general wellness.

The report provides 5-year market size forecasts for systems, services, devices and chipsets; presents the results of a survey with 530 early technology adopters and covers 100 wireless health and wellness market leaders and innovators.  The technologies covered include Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Smart, WiFi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, ANT, BodyLAN, NFC and others.
