150 Million HAN-enabled Smart Meters by 2020
Multi-billion dollar Smart Grid initiatives are driving technology advances for the Smart Home and the Internet of Things, according to global research firm ON World. By 2020, 150 million smart meters with a Home Area Network (HAN) gateway are planned to be installed worldwide San Diego, CA, April 6, 2011— The smart meter market increased 250% over the past two years and is set to triple over the next decade, according to ON World. Relentless energy demand and intensifying challenges associated with building new power plants make customer participation a top priority for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) projects. With 400 million smart meters planned worldwide, integration with a customer’s “Home Area Network” (HAN) has become a major developer and startup opportunity. ON World recently conducted phone interviews with 109 utilities and found that two-thirds are planning in-home energy management solutions. Within the next five years, 78% of electric meters shipped in North America will have a HAN gateway. “Smart metering projects and their needed solutions are driving new innovations for energy management and the Smart Home,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director. “Smart Grid initiatives are paving the way for the Internet of Things through open standards, cloud services, and Internet Protocol (IP) addressability at every endpoint.” A few of ON World’s research findings include the following:
ON World’s recently published reports include survey results with 100+ utilities, five year global market size forecasts, in-depth competitive analysis, and an evaluation of current AMI projects, technology requirements, standards developments, and residential energy programs for each geographical region. Based on 1000+ phone interviews and surveys with consumers and professionals, ON World’s recently published reports cover ZigBee, smart metering, green buildings, and home energy management.
